Description
The Telefunken M82 tackles a crowded field of kick drum and large-diaphragm dynamic mics with a straightforward goal: get a great low-end sound with less fuss. It’s an end-address design, so you simply aim the headgrille at your source, and it houses a substantial 35mm diaphragm that handles low frequencies with authority. Like its sibling the M81, the name nods to Charles Messier’s astronomical catalog. Every unit is hand-built and tested in Connecticut.
What sets the M82 apart is its pair of independent EQ switches, which combine for four total voicings. The KICK EQ switch is a passive filter that pulls down boxy low-mid buildup around 350Hz, so your kick stays punchy instead of muddy. The HIGH BOOST switch tilts the top end upward starting near 2kHz, adding roughly 6dB by 10kHz — great for beater attack on a kick, or added air and clarity when the mic is used on vocals, guitar or bass amps, brass, percussion, organ, or broadcast voice.
Positioned just inside a kick drum’s resonant head, the M82 is built to capture both beater snap and shell body in one pass, often eliminating the need to blend multiple mics. Its body borrows styling cues from the classic U47 headgrille shape and wears a rugged, smooth black finish suited to both stage and studio duty.
