The NT-SF1 is Rode’s answer to capturing an entire acoustic space rather than just a point source—built for VR, immersive film work, and game audio where the listener’s perspective might shift after the fact. Inside the brass body sit four 1/2″ TF45C cardioid condenser capsules, each machined in-house at Rode’s Sydney facility to sub-micron tolerances and arranged in a tetrahedral pattern. Powered by 48V phantom on each capsule, the mic outputs raw A-format across a 10-pin XLR connector, which the included breakout cable splits into four standard 3-pin XLR feeds for your interface or recorder.
What makes this setup powerful is what happens after the take. Rode’s downloadable SoundField ambisonic plug-in converts that A-format signal into B-format and lets you steer polar patterns, build custom shotgun-style pickups, or lay out a full surround mix—anything from 5.1 up to 7.1.4—without ever touching the mic again. The interface includes level visualization for quick reads on your soundscape, plus an advanced mode for engineers who want granular control over every parameter.
On the hardware side, expect a JFET impedance converter with bipolar output buffering, self-noise as low as 15 dBA, and headroom up to 129 dB SPL—enough to stay clean on a quiet room tone or a loud location shoot alike. Frequency response runs 20 Hz to 20 kHz across all four capsules.
