The Heil PR 22 breaks from decades-old dynamic mic design to give live and studio engineers a genuinely modern tool. Its 1-1/8″ low-mass diaphragm pairs with a high-output neodymium-iron-boron magnet structure to produce detailed upper-midrange articulation, making it a strong choice for lead and backing vocals on stage. That same wide frequency response and dynamic range translate well to instrument sources like snare drum and guitar cabinets in both live and recording settings.
Heil’s decades of experience with phase-coherent capsule design (dating back to 1982) show up in the PR 22’s cardioid pattern, which offers up to 40dB of rear rejection with no harsh proximity buildup or hot-spotting off-axis. This keeps bleed and stage noise out of the signal without coloring the sound you actually want.
A key engineering challenge with wide-range dynamic capsules is handling noise, which typically shows up between 50-100Hz. Rather than rolling off the low end at 125Hz like many ball-style mics (sacrificing warmth to mask the problem), Heil developed the ISO BAND, a Sorbothane rubber suspension system that isolates the capsule from handling noise while preserving full-range response down to 50Hz.
Built to take a beating from loud sources, the PR 22 handles sound pressure levels up to roughly 150dB, so it stays clean in front of loud amps, drums, or belting vocalists.
