The Earthworks M23 is a purpose-built measurement microphone for anyone who needs to trust their numbers – system techs tuning a PA, acousticians analyzing a room, or engineers verifying speaker performance. It carries on the M Series reputation as a go-to affordable reference mic, valued for staying accurate in both frequency response and time-domain behavior, not just one or the other.
Because it’s an omnidirectional design with a genuinely flat capsule response, the M23 captures what’s actually happening in a space rather than coloring it. Its fast impulse response and low handling noise make it well suited to demanding measurement software – it’s compatible with SMAART, MLSSA, Spectrafoo, TEF, and RTA systems, as well as measurement platforms from dbx and DEQX. It’s also an evolution of the SMAARTMIC previously sold by EAW, refined for better performance.
Build quality matches the use case: the M23 stays stable across a wide range of temperatures and atmospheric shifts, so measurements taken in a cold venue or a humid one won’t drift on you. It meets or exceeds ANSI Type 1 and IEC 61094 standards, and each unit ships with its own individual calibration chart documenting open-circuit sensitivity and frequency response curve (an electronic calibration file is also available). Earthworks recommends re-calibration every five years to keep it dialed in.
