Description
The AT4081 brings old-school ribbon warmth into a modern, phantom-powered package. Each unit is hand-assembled by Audio-Technica, with the ribbon corrugation, imprint, and construction done individually rather than mass-produced. The result is a figure-8 (bidirectional) mic that sounds smooth and true to source, especially on horns, strings, drum overheads, orchestral sections, and guitar cabinets.
What sets this ribbon apart is the engineering underneath the vintage character. Audio-Technica’s MicroLinear ribbon imprint (part of an 18-patents-pending design) helps the dual ribbon element resist lateral flexing, which means less distortion and a longer working life than older ribbon designs typically allow. A fine mesh grille adds another layer of protection against physical damage to the ribbon itself.
Powerful N50 neodymium magnets push output level well above what you’d expect from a passive ribbon, and the active electronics run on phantom power to keep impedance stable — so the AT4081 plays nicely with a much wider range of preamps than a traditional ribbon mic would. It also handles high SPL sources comfortably and holds an extended frequency response for detail across the spectrum.
The low-profile stick body is easy to angle and place tightly around drum kits, amp cabs, or crowded stage setups. METAlliance-certified.
