The 7603 sits at the top of Chameleon’s preamp lineup, built on the same design lineage as their 7602 but pushed further with new proprietary transformer work. Engineers developed custom nickel laminations and bobbin assemblies in-house, giving the input and output transformers wider bandwidth and notably low distortion compared to off-the-shelf parts. Every transformer is wrapped in mu-metal housing, shielding the signal path from RF interference and stray noise before it ever hits the circuit board.

Past the transformers, a fully discrete Class A gain stage handles amplification with low noise and high headroom – the same topology carries through every op-amp stage in the unit, so tonal character stays consistent from input to output.

For shaping tone, the 7603 includes a three-band, inductor-based EQ with variable high-pass filtering plus low-shelf, mid, and high-shelf controls – the kind of musical, transformer-era EQ curve that’s hard to replicate digitally.

Practical features round out the front panel: a Hi-Z instrument input on TRS for direct recording, 48V phantom power for condenser mics, and a mic input impedance switch (300Ω or 1200Ω) to tailor how your microphone responds. Relay-based switching handles input selection cleanly, while a calibrated VU meter tracks input and output levels at a glance. Overload indicators on both ends and a reverse phase switch help you catch problems before they hit your DAW.
