Description

When a loud drum kit, brass section, or screaming amp overloads your mixer’s input, the problem usually isn’t the mic – it’s the impedance mismatch feeding too much signal downstream. The Audio-Technica AT8202 sits directly between a balanced low-impedance microphone and your console or portable recorder, dialing the signal down before it can clip the input stage.

It’s a small inline barrel that plugs straight into an XLRF-type chassis connector, giving you three switchable attenuation settings – -10 dB, -20 dB, or -30 dB – so you can match the pad to the source rather than fighting gain staging after the fact. Because it’s built to pass phantom power, condenser mics on the other end keep working normally without any extra routing or workarounds.

The housing is steel, which does double duty as physical protection and shielding against hum pickup, making it a solid choice for live tracking sessions where cable runs get messy.

  • Switchable -10 dB / -20 dB / -30 dB attenuation
  • Passes phantom power for condenser mics
  • Steel case shields against hum
  • Input: XLRF-type / Output: XLRM-type
  • 1000 ohms input impedance, 200 ohms output impedance (at -10 dB)
  • Frequency response: 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz
  • 3.94 in (100 mm) long, 0.75 in (19 mm) diameter, 2.8 oz (80 g)

Keep one in your gig bag alongside your cables – it’s the kind of small fix that saves a take.
