Heil designed the PR48 around one job: making kick drums sound like kick drums without a stack of outboard processing. A 1.5″ large-diaphragm dynamic element sits inside a vulcanized shock mount, isolating it from stand and pedal vibration, while a built-in low pass filter adds a +10dB boost from 50-100Hz to lock onto the drum’s resonant thump. A second boost, +4dB from 3.5-5kHz, brings out the beater click, then response falls off sharply above 8.5kHz to keep unwanted rattle and internal drum noise out of the signal. Overall frequency response runs 30Hz-8.5kHz.

Off-axis rejection is rated at -40dB at 180 degrees, so bleed from surrounding kit pieces stays under control, and with a max SPL rating of 148dB, there’s no risk of the element choking on a hard-hitting beater or a punchy resonant head.

The housing itself came out of conversations with working drum techs: the XLR entry point is slanted rather than straight-in, which makes cabling up inside a kick drum noticeably less fiddly during load-in. It’s finished in flat black emron with a red grille, and outputs a balanced 600 ohm signal.
