The Distressor built its reputation as the compressor engineers reach for when they want character, not just gain control. Dave Derr designed it around the traits he loved in classic units like the 1176, LA-2A, and Gain Brain, then packed in a custom gain circuit that adds analog warmth digital sources often lack. With more than 22,000 units already in studios worldwide, chances are good you’ve heard one on a hit record without realizing it.

The EL8X takes the original design further with two switchable modifications:

British Mode – Inspired by a quirky trick engineers discovered on the UREI LN1176 (holding all four ratio buttons in at once), this switch delivers that same over-the-top, aggressive envelope shape and knee behavior. Unlike the original hack, you can apply it to any ratio setting, not just one.
Image Link – Adds a true stereo image-lock option alongside the classic phase-based link, plus the ability to combine both simultaneously. Useful when you need to preserve exact left/right balance on stereo material while still having the option of phase-correction thickening when you want it.

Under the hood, the EL8X keeps the Distressor’s core specs: frequency response of 2 Hz-160 kHz in clean mode (+0/-3 dB, shaped differently in Dist 2/Dist 3), 110 dB dynamic range in 1:1 mode, and attack/release times ranging from 50 microseconds up to 20 seconds depending on ratio and mode. It ships in a single-height 1U metal chassis (1.75″ x 10″ x 19″).
